For this final major project, I have decided to create a 2.5D animation. I felt like I really wanted to push my limits since this is the final project and I wanted to feel proud of myself, as well as learn new animating skills.
The thing that made me very inspired to carry out this project, was the animations of Rino Stefano Tagliafierro, a very talented artist. I have used his animating techniques in After Effects to create my piece.
Unfortunately, I came upon many problems and stressful situations because of my sporadic idea changes. I have created at least 4 or 5 different concept ideas that I really tried to carry on with, but they just all ended up being scrapped because I wasn’t satisfied with them enough. At one point, I just felt like giving up and stopping for a while. It wasn’t until I only had 4 weeks left, that I went back to my original, initial idea that I have put on hold in the beginning. Luckily, it all started going well from there.
During all these weeks, I went through a lot of different artist research, YouTube videos and all types of different websites, just to find my inspiration and learn how to use Adobe After Effects in the way I needed and wanted to in order to create my animation. I felt that looking at all the different tutorial videos gave me a lot of motivation and helped me regain my lost confidence. I feel that I have gained a lot of new experience in After Effects and how to draw different perspective in thanks to all the research I carried out. I feel like these new animating skills will come very handy one day when I will want to do some freelancing and would like to animate a character.
In my project, I mainly used Photoshop and Paint Tool Sai because my laptop can only handle small programs and Photoshop made it overheat and become slow a lot of the time. Luckily, After Effects wasn’t as bad and I managed to get the animation done on time. I have also used my Graphics Monitor and my laptop since most of the time I spent on my final project, was at home because I had fewer distractions and could concentrate better, as well as I had my graphics monitor to use.
Overall, I am very pleased with the outcome. If I could, I would have made the animation much longer and create more background movements to create a more of a realistic feel. I have really enjoyed myself and I feel very confident when animating in After Effects now, all thanks to the project. I have managed to achieve what I initially wanted to and if I were to change my mistakes, I would have spent more time experimenting with different character movements and perspectives to make the character seem more interesting. I feel that if I were to try and animate my old concepts, the product wouldn’t have been as impactful. I am very pleased that I have managed to complete my first, initial idea and that people seemed to like it very much too.
Next time, I will definitely try and relax more and try a different approach when creating ideas, to overcome the sporadic changes that I do. I feel that this has been a problem for a while now but with practice, I will overcome it.
From all of this, I have learned to not give up on your ideas and to strive forward because in the end, you will get there.
